Hi – I’m Mark, amateur photographer.
Whenever I’m at a Manhattan CHIEF Basketball game with a camera, I try to snap a few pics. I ended up at a lot of CHIEF basketball games with a camera over the years — hope you enjoy these pictures of players of all sizes.
Why are all of these pictures here?
Long, long ago in a gym not that far away I grew tired of the dark, blurry pictures of our children playing basketball that came from the family digicam. So I traded in the old film SLR for a DSLR, a Nikon D5000. DSLRs were pretty mature by then so the blurry pictures were much improved, but not yet perfect. The desire for perfection re-triggered the Nikon acquisition syndrome (NAS) from my youth, leading to a long series of camera bodies and lenses with a goal of less and less blurry pictures.
When I first took the D5000 down to courtside I noticed several interesting things:
– the view of the game is great down there,
– it was pretty easy, at least in the few well-lit gyms, to get nice eye-level pictures of the players passing, dribbling, and shooting,
– I got bored quickly if I only shot pictures when my kid had the ball.
Later I noticed the camera intrigued a lot of referees, so I eventually made lots of friends in striped shirts without even trying (I mean who would try?). Sadly, being friends now, I had to quit yelling at them like a coach. Most of the time.
I figured others would enjoy pictures of their children as much as we enjoyed pictures of ours so I snapped every CHIEF player who got the ball. I have not been bored since starting that approach. I soon accumulated a lot of pictures of everyone on my child’s team as well as the other CHIEF teams playing — no sense leaving out the other teams — and found a way to put the pictures online. At the time my online posting solution was Google’s Picasa Web Albums. A few years later that transitioned to Google Plus. Last year Google Plus went away, leading to the slow development of this website. If you were on the CHIEF Basketball e-mail list back then you saw messages from me with the link to each new site and some whining about how slow I was to get a new photo page started up on those platforms. Hmm. Welcome to the WordPress platform for CHIEF Basketball pictures.
Picture Points and Facts
- The pictures are copyrighted (© 2020 Mark Casada) but all Manhattan CHIEF families have my permission to use them for noncommercial purposes.
- The files have moderately high resolution, so they should print fine if you want to print anything. If you wanted to make larger than a 5 x 7 enlargement there might not be enough resolution. I have higher resolutions of most files — I can easily check to see if I have any particular one if that ever comes up. Please ask.
